Delegates will have the opportunity to experience Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, another vibrant city in Asia, on Day 5 of the Conference, where they will engage in a rich 1-day program that explores the city’s premier developments, infrastructure hubs, and cultural sites.
Kuala Lumpur, known to locals as “KL,” is one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions, with a population of more than 7 million, and ranked as the world’s tenth-most-visited city in 2017. With modest beginnings as a tin-mining outpost in the 1880s, in addition to being Malaysia’s capital, the city has grown into a major education, technology, banking and energy-industry hub. It now commands one of the most dynamic skylines in Asia, with the new Exchange 106 and Merdeka PNB 118 towers joining the renowned Petronas Twin Towers, the World’s Tallest Buildings from 1998 to 2004.
The warm, tropical rainforest climate and vibrant street life give the city an informal air that encourages year-round outdoor dining and strolling, and it is common to see buildings of all heights festooned with greenery. The “green heart” of Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) is a thriving central park with inviting water features, surrounded by sophisticated retail, hotel and commercial developments. Similar projects are now underway, converting underused lots in the center city into high-density cultural and commercial hubs.
Though it has many of the traffic and urban-sprawl issues of comparable cities, Kuala Lumpur has made major investments in transportation infrastructure, and in ensuring that new developments support a high quality of life, while preserving the hybrid culture of its traditional kampungs (neighborhoods), such as Bukit Bintang. The modern airport is connected to downtown by a dedicated express train, and an array of rail and monorail services radiates from Sentral station across the metro area.
The Kuala Lumpur regional city program (with transportation and accommodation paid by the delegate) will incorporate two half-day segments that focus on unique themes, each progressing from a presentation format to expansive tours, site visits, and technical demonstrations.
