Envelope Performance
Bolstered by new materials and modeling software, façade designs for tall buildings have become incredibly complex, breaking new ground in visual and structural expression. Yet, with growing awareness of the massive energy expenditure required to maintain the built environment, the performance requirements for today’s tall building envelopes have increased as well. The industry demands that envelopes mitigate solar gain and heat while allowing copious natural light; and maintain comfortable interior temperatures while filtering in fresh air year-round. This workshop explored issues surrounding the design and construction of façades, including access and maintenance, while examining burgeoning techniques to increase structural performance and energy efficiency.
