Hickory, Melbourne

This presentation explores the development of Hickory Building Systems (HBS), an advanced construction platform for high-rise construction, which has pursued moving the industry from construction to something closer to production. This includes extensive knowledge regarding manufacturing and emerging technologies to improve productivity and efficiency. New patented mechanical connections enable the manufacturing of buildings off-site where they can then be bolted together integrating the core, shear walls, bathrooms, and façade into the structure.

The construction method is supported by a digital platform that automates much of the construction documentation and delivery process. This new advanced construction system improves every metric of the construction process, including safety, quality, time, price, and resource-efficiency.

This technology has had a significant impact during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing construction to progress onsite with only 22 employees, while adhering to intense Melbourne restrictions, social distancing requirements, and overall reducing the risk of the workforce. In comparison to a conventional build, Hickory was able to maintain the construction program with minimal delays. HBS are manufactured in Melbourne in a manufacturing facility that is fully equipped with supporting technology. SYNC Bathroom Pods are also manufactured in the facility removing over 12 trades from site.
